BRAVE AND HONEST!

Kelly Corrigan is the author of The Middle Place, February's book! It was a very comfortable read that had me laughing at her funny stories, crying along side her as she endured cancer treatments and connecting with her love for family. I loved her honesty and am thankful she shared her story. I would definitely read another book written by Kelly if she decides to write one.

What are your thoughts on The Middle Place? Comment or email me at littlemrsw@yahoo.ca.

Happy Reading!

Guess what? I did not like this book! I thought I would, but it was not what I`d expected. Why? First of all, I didn`t like the author. I thought she came across as whiny, demanding, and arrogant. The way she went on and ON about being a Corrigan as if nothing (or no one) could compare. And I REALLY didn`t like the way she elevated her father to such a level that it made her mother feel left out. I mean, I can`t imagine clearly letting my parents know I had a favourite - that would be so hurtful. And yet Kelly does it blatantly, in print, for the whole world to see. That seemed so insensitive to me.

This story was not really about cancer, or at least not about a woman`s struggle with cancer. It was an homage to her father...one that I felt was at times too personal. I`m sure her dad is an amazing guy, and her love for him is admirable...but after awhile I just got tired of the idolation. To me that`s all this book was about. She never told us how her kids dealt with her cancer, or even how her husband did (well, barely).

Anyway, those are my thoughts! I loved Kelly`s `Transcending` essay so I`d still read more of her work...but this book didn`t do much for me.

I really enjoyed reading The Middle Place. Unlike Zainab I really enjoyed how the author let me in on a time in her life where she was growing and maturing. I felt she wrote exactly where she was at that time in her life; by the end of the book I could see how she realized she had to put her own family first, how her Mom was much more than she ever gave her credit for and how there was more to life than being a Corrigan. I enjoy reading about people who are real about who they are, their weaknesses and what life is teaching them. I am honoured that she risked judement and criticism to bring us her story. Way to go Kelly.
